When you’re investing in beautiful stone countertops, you want everything to look perfect – and that includes the seams. At Granite Depot of Indianapolis, we understand how important the small details are. That’s why we use advanced tools and expert techniques to make seams as smooth and invisible as possible. One of the key tools we use is called the Seam Phantom – and it’s a game-changer.
But First, Let’s Talk About Why And When Seams Are Needed?
Not every countertop has seams, but sometimes they’re necessary. For example, you may need a seam when:
- Your kitchen layout has a big L-shape or large island
- The countertop is longer than the slab itself
- We need to fit stone through tight spaces like in between 3+ walls, doorways or stairs
In these cases, seams help us install the stone safely and properly – but our goal is always to make them as clean and unnoticeable as possible.
How Seams Are Normally Made?
Traditionally, seams are made by cutting two pieces of stone and gluing them together with strong adhesive. Installers then clamp the pieces in place and level them by hand or seam setter.
While this works, it can sometimes leave a small ridge where the stones meet, or a visible line – especially on stones with bold patterns or colors.
What Is the Seam Phantom?
The Seam Phantom is a high-precision tool that helps us take seams to the next level. It gently grinds the edges of each stone before we glue them together, making sure the fit is incredibly smooth and tight – down to the smallest detail.
Think of it as fine-tuning the edges of the stone so that they line up almost perfectly, both to the eye and the touch.
The industry standard thickness according to the Natural Stone Institute (NSI) is 1/8″. However, we provide a 1/16″ thickness when using Seam Phantom. Please keep in mind that the final result may differ from the photos shown, depending on the stone type and the agreed layout.
Why It Makes a Difference
Using the Seam Phantom allows us to:
-
Create smoother seams that feel even to the touch
-
Make seams less visible, even on patterned stone
-
Align the veins and colors more precisely
Most companies don’t use this kind of tool – but we do, because quality matters.
At Granite Depot, we use top-of-the-line fabrication equipment from Italy, and we bring that same level of precision to every part of the job – including your seams. The Seam Phantom is just one of the ways we make sure your countertops not only look beautiful but are installed with true craftsmanship.
