TEMPLATING

After you’ve selected the ideal stone color for your project, it’s time to schedule a templating appointment. To ensure accuracy at the time of installation, please make sure all the cabinets are installed and leveled, and that all of the appliances, sinks and accessories are present at the day of templating.

03

FINAL SLAB SELECTION

When your template has been created, it’s time to confirm the layout of the project on the slab. If the stone you’ve selected has a varying pattern, we recommend a return visit to the stone yard to give your input on which part of the slab will be used for your project. Within the next several days, your stone will be installed and sealed.

About Granite Depot of Indianapolis

Granite Depot of Indianapolis is a full-service stone countertop fabricator and installer, proudly serving Indianapolis and surrounding areas. We specialize in custom countertops for kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and a variety of other residential and
commercial projects. While we also offer cabinetry, this guide focuses specifically on our countertop process—from the first quote to final installation.

What sets us apart is a combination of experience, efficiency, and transparency. Granite Depot is one of the highest-reviewed countertop companies in Indianapolis, with over 400 positive Google reviews from homeowners, contractors, and designers who trust our work.
We also offer a large, in-house stone inventory at our downtown Indianapolis location, allowing customers to view and select full slabs in person—an important step in choosing the right material for their space.

Our typical project timeline, from contract signing to installation, ranges from approximately three weeks during slower seasons to four to five weeks during busier times. While timelines can vary depending on project scope and material availability, our goal is always to complete each project as efficiently as possible without compromising quality.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what to expect when working with Granite Depot – from getting a quote and selecting your stone to templating, fabrication, and installation.

Getting a Quote

Getting a quote with Granite Depot is simple, and we offer a few convenient ways to get started. You can submit a request through our website or social media, visit our showroom in person, or schedule a free in-home estimate within a 40-mile radius of our location.

To provide an accurate quote, we’ll need some basic information about your project. This includes approximate measurements of your countertops (including any overhangs), as well as details about any cutouts you may need—such as sinks, cooktops, or other custom openings. If you would like us to remove your existing countertops, we’ll also need to know what material they are made of (laminate, granite, tile, concrete, etc.), as removal can vary depending on the material.

Once we have your information, one of our sales representatives will create a layout of your project using our quoting software and prepare a detailed estimate. Quotes can typically be completed within one business day and can be printed in-store or sent directly to your email for review.

When it comes to selecting your material, you have several options. We carry a large selection of stone colors available to view on our website and in our showroom. In addition, we work with local suppliers, giving you access to a wider range of materials through special orders. If you choose a slab from one of our partner warehouses, your quote will reflect special order pricing.

At Granite Depot, we offer a wide range of materials, including granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, and Dekton. Each material has its own characteristics in terms of durability, maintenance, and overall look. We also carry a selection of sinks, including stainless steel and granite composite options, which can be included in your project.

Once you receive your quote, you’re welcome to take your time reviewing it, comparing options, and finalizing your selection before moving forward

After You Approach the Quote

Once you’re ready to move forward, the next step is signing the contract and submitting a 50% deposit. This officially starts your project and allows us to begin scheduling and preparation.

Contracts can be signed either in person or electronically, and we offer flexible payment options for your deposit, including cash, check, Zelle, ACH, or card.

After we receive your signed contract and deposit, our team will create your project in our system and begin coordinating the next steps. If your space is ready, our scheduling manager will contact you to arrange your templating (measurement) appointment.

Before we can schedule templating, it is essential that all cabinets and supporting structures are fully installed and properly leveled. This is a critical requirement. Stone countertops are rigid materials, and uneven cabinets can lead to stress points that may cause cracking or performance issues over time. For this reason, we strongly recommend ensuring your cabinets are professionally leveled before moving forward.

If your project is not ready right away, that’s completely fine. Once your contract is signed and deposit is received, we can reserve your selected slabs and lock in your pricing. Your material will be held until you are ready to proceed, whether that’s weeks or even months down the line.

When your project is ready, we’ll move forward with scheduling your templating appointment – the next key step in bringing your countertops to life.

Templating (Measurement Appointment)

The templating appointment is one of the most important steps in your project. This is when we take precise measurements of your space to ensure your countertops/project are fabricated to fit perfectly.

Depending on the size and complexity of your project, templating typically takes anywhere from 40 minutes for smaller areas to a few hours for larger or more detailed layouts.

During this visit, our template technician will first verify that all cabinets and supporting structures are fully installed and properly leveled. This step is critical. Stone countertops are rigid materials and do not flex, any unevenness in the cabinets can create stress points that may lead to cracking or long-term performance issues. For best results, we recommend checking your cabinets with a laser level prior to the appointment.

Once the site is ready, measurements are taken using the LT-2D3D Laser Templator system – a professional digital templating solution designed specifically for the stone industry. This system captures highly accurate, real-time measurements of your space, including wall variations, angles, overhangs, and all required cutouts. Compared to traditional manual templating, laser technology significantly reduces the margin of error and allows for a more precise fit during installation.

The LT-2D3D system creates a digital template of your project, which is then used throughout the fabrication process. This ensures consistency from measurement to production and helps eliminate guesswork.

During templating, our technician will also review key layout details with you, including edge profiles, overhangs, and any special requests. This is your opportunity to confirm how everything will look and function before fabrication begins.

If your project includes a full-height backsplash, the process involves additional steps. We will first template and install your countertops. After installation, we return to take precise measurements for the backsplash, followed by a second visit for its installation. This approach ensures the most accurate fit, as walls are rarely perfectly straight.

For more complex or custom projects, additional steps may be required, but the process described here reflects the standard workflow for most installations.

Pre-Fabrication Review & Approval

After your templating appointment is completed, your project moves into an internal review process before any fabrication begins.

At Granite Depot, every project goes through multiple levels of verification. Your digital template is reviewed by our project manager, shop manager, and accounting team to ensure that all details are accurate and aligned. This includes confirming measurements, layout feasibility, seam placement, required supports, sink and cutout specifications, and overall project scope. During this stage, we also verify that your invoice reflects all final selections and details.

Once these internal checks are completed, we prepare a detailed layout for your approval. Within one to two business days after templating, your sales representative will send you a PDF file outlining your project.

This document will include all key details, such as:
● overall layout and dimensions
● seam locations
● sink and cutout placements
● edge profile
● selected color
● other important specifications related to your project

We ask that you carefully review this document to ensure everything matches your expectations. This step is important, as it serves as the final confirmation before your project moves into production.

Once your approval is received, your job is scheduled for fabrication and installation

Fabrication Process

Once your project is approved, it moves into the fabrication stage – where your countertops are cut, shaped, and finished with precision.

The first step in fabrication is creating a detailed slab layout. Using our Iris by D2 Technology slab scanner, we capture a high-resolution image of your actual stone slab. This allows us to digitally place your project layout directly onto the slab using the exact measurements collected during templating.

This process helps us visualize how your countertops will look before cutting begins. We carefully plan the placement of each piece to achieve the best possible flow of veining and patterns, while also optimizing material usage. While natural stone can vary and perfect matching is not always possible, we always aim for the most visually consistent and balanced result.

If requested, we can share this layout with you for review. Using our visualization software, you’ll be able to see a digital preview of your project – and on supported devices, even view it in your space using augmented reality.

Once the layout is finalized, fabrication begins using high-end Italian equipment from Breton, a globally recognized leader in stone fabrication technology. Your countertops are cut with the Breton Genya CNC saw, ensuring precise and accurate cuts based on your digital template.

After cutting, each piece is processed on the Breton Forte CNC router, which shapes edges, polishes surfaces, and completes all necessary detailing, including sink and cooktop cutouts. This equipment allows us to achieve clean finishes, consistent edge profiles, and a high level of precision throughout the entire project.

Throughout fabrication, our team maintains strict quality control to ensure that every piece meets our standards before it leaves the shop.

Installation Day

Once your countertops are fabricated, the final step is installation – bringing your project to life!

Depending on the size and complexity of your project, installation can take anywhere from about one hour for smaller jobs to a full day for larger or more detailed installations.

Your project will be assigned to one of our professional installation crews, typically consisting of two to three installers. On the day of installation, we ask that the work area is clear and easily accessible to allow our team to work efficiently and safely.

The installation process includes carefully setting each piece of stone in place, ensuring proper alignment and fit. The countertops are then secured using professional-grade silicone, and any necessary support brackets are installed where confirmed and required.

If your project includes a sink, our team will mount and secure it to the countertop using specialized clips and adhesive. We will also drill faucet and accessory holes (such as for soap dispensers) based on your project specifications. To ensure everything is completed correctly, please have all fixtures on-site and ready at the time of installation, and inform our team of any specific requirements.

After installation is complete, our team will perform a general cleanup of the work area and walk you through the finished project. You’ll have the opportunity to inspect everything and ask any questions to make sure you’re fully satisfied with the result.

For natural stone countertops, we apply a complimentary 2-year sealer after installation to help protect the surface. Engineered materials such as quartz do not require sealing. (You can learn more about sealing and maintenance in our detailed care guide.)

After Installation & Warranty

Once your installation is complete, we ask that you take time to carefully inspect your new countertops. We provide a three-business-day window for you to review the finished project and notify us of any concerns, such as visible scratches, cracks, or installation-related issues.

This step is important, as it allows us to promptly address anything that may need adjustment. After this initial inspection period, any new damage is considered to be the result of normal use, wear and tear, or external factors.

Granite Depot stands behind the quality of our work and offers a limited warranty on our fabrication and installation. This includes areas such as seam performance and undermount sink installation, as well as any issues directly related to our workmanship.

At the same time, it’s important to understand that our warranty applies specifically to work performed by our team. We are not responsible for issues caused by pre-existing site conditions or work completed by other parties, such as cabinetry, flooring, or structural elements.

If any concerns arise, our team is committed to reviewing the situation and providing solutions when applicable. We aim to resolve issues quickly and fairly, ensuring that every customer is taken care of.

Project Timeline Overview

From the moment your contract is signed and deposit is received, most projects are completed within approximately 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the season, material availability, and project complexity.

Our process is designed to be efficient, organized, and transparent – so you always know what to expect at every stage.
